About

Heirloom Design is a part-time indulgence of designing and fabricating delicious cushions and quilts. Hand-made with pure wool, feather-down inners, nickel-free zippers and buckets of dedication and love, I thoroughly enjoy exploring and recapturing recollections from the past, reinventing them with a modernist twist to give them purpose and beauty.
Heirloom Design cushions are exclusively stocked at Douglas and Bec.

A bit about me, well I employ a multidisciplinary approach to any given situation, and thus have many fingers in many pies. For more of my work, please visit www.designbyruth.co.nz
My name is Ruth Mitchener, I grew up in Aotearoa, New Zealand with a paintbrush in hand. I studied Fine Arts in a decommissioned Monk Monastery, filled countless sketchbooks on a 9 month sabbatical in Europe, I manufactured medicines at Weleda, then I completed a degree in Industrial Design at Victoria University of Wellington with first class honors. During this time I started up Heirloom Design as a side project whilst studying fulltime.
Heirloom Design had a bit of a nap over the past year as I focused on finishing my degree (I won a medal for it too!) and got married (you can see the process of fabricating this on our wedding blog here, I even made my wedding dress!) and then we moved cities. So now that we are all settled in, I'm all geared up for another rip-roaring cushion season!
